Summer Skirts

I’ve mentioned before that Summer dressing, to me, should be easy and effortless, but still polished.  There’s nothing better than being able to pair a great pair of pants or a bright silk skirt with your favorite tee or tank top.  It’s the perfect balance of appearing casual, yet like you still care about your appearance.

Lately I’ve been stocking up on skirts of different lengths in preparation for warm months.  I’m going for bold colors, interesting prints and fun hemlines to wear with my best simple solid colored tanks, layered with denim shirts or a light sweater.

Sephora Sale!

I’m a sucker for a bargain and Sephora is having quite the sale right now.  They’re featuring tons of great deals on their new re-furbished website, including great giveaways.  I like to shop at places that provide quality product, but also throw in special perks like free swag and discounted goods.  Becoming a V.I.B. (Very Important Beauty Insider) is very much recommended.  I pretty much get extra perks with every order!

Prepara Kitchen Tools

I had heard about Prepara from one of Oprah’s Favorite Things back in 2010, but didn’t realize what an amazing company it is until recently.  Their gadgets are smart, useful and they actually work!  I’m a impulse purchase junkie and have all the crazy Television promoted kitchen helpers, which most of the time end in disappointment.  Not this time!  Browse through their website and fall in love with some of their time savers like I have.

My Favorite Prepara Gadgets:

Topper Chopper $24.99

Grind up anything from cookies to graham crackers to get an easy to dip ice cream topping.

Chef’s Bottle Kit $19.99

Drizzle anything from chocolate to oil, also comes with a brush for easy to apply marinades.

Herb Savor $29.99 *FEATURED ON OPRAH’S FAVORITE THINGS

Preserves fresh herbs for up to 3 weeks.

Fill these ice shells with anything from an alcoholic beverage to a decadent desert.

May Beauty Box 5 Review

This month’s Beauty Box 5 was not my favorite.  So far, Birchbox and Testtube are front runners in my opinion, but it was still fun to try out some new products.

Tree Hut Brazilian Nut Shea Body Butter in Hawaiian Kukui $15/3 7 oz bottles (received 2 oz):  This is ok.  It contains lot of beneficial vitamins and is a nice consistency, but the smell isn’t my favorite.  It’s a bit pungent.  It leaves skin feeling nourished, however, so I’ll probably keep use it a few times, but do not plan on buying the full size version.

Evie Evan Purity Masque $10/.5 oz (received full size):  I was really curious about this one because even though I don’t use mask’s regularly, I’ve been looking for a good one.  The problem is (and I know this sounds crazy) sometimes I get really claustrophobic with these things.  As it starts to tighten, I swear to you I begin to panic and have to talk myself out of jumping in the shower.  This product is TIGHT.  It literally pulls your face if you make any kind of expression.  On the other hand, after I made it through the required 10 minutes, I rinsed it off to find smooth skin with visibly reduced pore sizes.  It did make my face a little dry though.  Overall, not bad.  Not sure it’s exactly what I’m looking for.

Comodynes Self-Tanning Natural & Uniform Color Towelette $9.75/8 pack (received 1):  Very similar to Tan Towels, which I LOVE.  This one worked really well and was easy to use.  I would definitely buy this again.

It’s A 10 Miracle Hair Mask $23/8 oz (received 1 small packet):  I was pleasantly surprised with this one.  I tried it after shampooing and left it in for about five minutes.  It promises to detangle and it definitely delivers.  My hair felt fresh, smooth and shiny after one use.  Best of all – combing out my typical knotted mane was a breeze!  Good find.

It’s A 10 Miracle Styling Serum $18.70/4 oz (received 1 small packet):  I used this gel on both wet and dry hair.  The good part is that it didn’t come out crunchy or sticky, which is what I was worried about.  The bad part – it didn’t really do anything at all.  Nothing noticeable happened besides maybe minor frizz control.  It’s not something I’d buy.

Merlot Grape Seed Moisturizer $16/4 oz (received 3 1 time use packets):  The main benefit of this product is reducing the signs of aging.  I used it for a couple days and felt it was ok, but not great.  It wasn’t very nourishing as my skin still felt a bit dry after using it.  I think there are better anti-aging creams on the market.

Rompers

Let me start off by saying it took me a long time to get on board with this one.  Rompers can look amazing but are also a hot bed for looking like a fool.  There is only one thing you have to be sure of – FIT.  It should not be loose or baggy (especially in the back) and definitely not too tight.  They should be fitted in all areas.  It may even take a visit to the tailor.

Once you have the right proportions, however, they can be amazing.  SO easy to wear and they’re perfect for a weekend getaway like my trip to Santa Barbara these next couple of days.  They’re pretty no fuss and allow you to not have to put a lot of effort into coming up with a great outfit.

Magazine Holders

To say I get a lot of magazines is an understatement.  They have been a place of inspiration and a pleasure source since before I can remember and they are actually the reason this blog is named “ear-marked”.  I spent hours of my childhood flipping through them, turning down – or ear-marking – pages of things I had to have.

Yes, it’s true that most of these things were never purchased, but in the moment, the possibility seemed real.  What has resulted is a timeline of things I have loved.  A while ago, after realizing going from one end of my apartment to the other was more like swimming through Lucky’s and Elle Decor’s, I decided to invest in a large straw basket and promised myself I would keep my collection to the contents of it.  I started tearing out pages and filing them instead of keeping whole magazines – except for the ones that were so special just could not be thrown away.

Well, my basket looks more like a game of magazine Jenga at this point and is literally about to topple over.  What’s wrong with two baskets anyway?

Face Scrubs

My skincare routine has become more important to me as years go by.  There were definitely days where washing my face twice a day felt like such an ordeal, but now it’s a refreshing way to begin and close my day.  I’ve stuck to a pretty standard face wash, toner, moisturizer course of action and am only now experimenting with various masks and scrubs.

That being said, the one product I have used for a while and absolutely LOVE is Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant ($50).  I use it about once a week to diminish dead skin and rejuvenate my face.  I have sensitive skin, so I really like how it is not a very abrasive exfoliater.  You pour some into your hand, mix with a little bit of water to create a thicker paste and surround your face/neck.  I leave it on for about 60 seconds (while shampooing) and then rinse.  It leaves skin soft and renewed.

Other Exfoliaters My Skin Is Thirsty For (and I’ve heard rave reviews about):

Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash $25

Burt’s Bees Citrus Facial Scrub $7.99

St. Ives Fresh Skin Invigorating Apricot Scrub $7.49

Clinique Exfoliating Scrub $18.50

Kiehls Milk Honey & Almond Scrub $20.50

High Fashion Interest, Hot Mess Bank Account

I made the mistake of reading an article years ago that interviewed Cameron Diaz where she told a story about being undiscovered and choosing between paying her rent or buying an Alaia dress.  She said she still has the dress and that it remains to be one of her favorite pieces in her wardrobe.

Let’s just say I’ve been living under this mentality for five years and I’m still not a Charlie’s Angel.

Here’s to all the girls who shop online for hours, putting as many items into their “basket” as they want, only to see the final total, cry, close the window and head to H&M.
