Weekend Bags

Summer inevitably brings on spontaneous trips that don’t involve a lot of planning.  They’re exciting and a great way to reconnect to that thrilling feeling that came during childhood in between School years.  Whether it’s a night away at a local hotel offering a great deal or an impromptu decision to drive a couple hours along the coast to a great vacation spot, I like to be able to get out of the house within an hour before the idea of actually doing it fades.  Some of my favorite daytime purses are actually larger weekend bags that are perfect for these occasions.  Big enough to fit the essentials for a different climate, but small enough so that it is easy to carry.

Summer Dresses Under $100

Everyone knows I love a good deal.  I’m talking any sort of discount whatsoever… $1 off, throw in a free gift, some sort of upgrade… it makes me giddy inside.  There’s a constant battle of splurging vs. saving in my head and I probably think about my purchases (both past and future) every 5 minutes.  I knew I had it bad when I once saw a sign while passing Old Navy at age 13 for .34 cent shirts.  I swear to you I remember nothing – like a total black out.  I came to, hours later, in my closet sifting through about 15 of the same exact shirt in every color they had.  I mean, I cleared out the racks.  Upside?  I still only spent about $6.  Low?  The shirt was horrible… like, really, really ugly.

There’s something about a deal that condones the purchase.  It’s a trap.  But, I’ve realized at the time it was so I’d have something to back up my argument when my Dad would get my Visa Buxx card statement (a pre-set limit debit card made for teenagers to teach them how to manage money which I BEGGED my parents for).  Being able to say, “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.  This was a once and a lifetime opportunity!  It would have been stupid NOT to have bought it!!” was just so much easier than flat out breaking the ‘no more clothes’ rule.  It got so bad that I used to buy things, hide the bags at my friends houses and then smuggle them into my house days later when my parents weren’t home… but that’s another story for another day.

In all reality, I’m still using the sale signs as a crutch for my chronic buyer’s remorse and the proof is that I wanted a really expensive pair of jeans last year so I flagged the website to let me know if any discounts/savings were happening.  A week later I got an email from them saying, “Free Shipping Until Midnight”.  Deal was done.  I saved $5.  Problem.

Summer Scarves

There are times when I love trying on what seems like my whole wardrobe, testing combinations to find the perfect outfit for an event, and then there’s my normal reality when I have 15 minutes to pick out what I’m wearing.  For those days, I usually go simple (printed pants or jeans with a solid top).  I always like to top it off with something more noticeable though, like a big statement necklace, an embellished headband or my latest addiction – summer scarves.

There are so many ways to wear them (around neck or head are my favs) and they can instantly amp up what would be a pretty plain look.

Denim Vests

I’ve been obsessing over finding a good denim vest for the upcoming Summer months.  It’s the perfect accessory to throw on over a maxi dress, printed skirt or colored denim.  At first, I contemplated shelling out a bit more for a basic medium washed denim vest, but after finding so many fun colors and prints, have decided Old Navy’s version (pictured first below) is perfect and will also allow me to choose one or two fun styles.

Lightweight Sweaters

Living by the beach is great.  There’s nothing like being able to ride your bike to meet friends along the boardwalk on a hot Summer day, which more times than not turns into an all day/evening adventure.  I’ve learned to always be prepared for the breeze that takes over once the Sun goes down by being sure to never leave the house without a lightweight sweater that’s easy to layer over a swimsuit, printed shorts and a basic tank (my Summer uniform).

Printed Shorts

Integrating new colors and prints into your wardrobe will maximize the use of everyday basics.  I’m trying to be really conscious of buying things I don’t have anything like in order to mix up my looks.  With Summer right around the corner, a great way to create easy outfits that are fun, but still allow you to run around, is to layer your staples on top (that you already have) – T’s, blazers, lightweight sweaters, and invest in some printed shorts.

Shorts have a bad rap because they can be a disaster if you buy the wrong type for your body.  Know that your shorts should hit just below the largest part of your thigh.  Also, make sure they are not too small (looks all kinds of wrong) AND not too big (usually looks really sloppy).  When all else fails (even though I love wearing shorts with strappy, colorful sandals) – wear them with a wedge or some type of comfortable heel – it instantly takes 5 lbs off.

That being said, it’s a great way to mix up solid colors and allows you to use a lot of pieces you probably already have.

Top It Off

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was –  If I’m going to buy something, make it totally different than anything I have in my closet.  It’s so easy to know you look good in something and continually buy similar styles.  Then, you become bored with wearing the same thing everyday and although your bank statement proves otherwise, you feel like you have nothing to wear.

I’ve been watching a lot of VH1’s House of ConsignmentCorri McFadden, the owner and founder of eDrop-Off (luxury consignment business) makes a really good point when she tells her clients to never buy something in two or more colors.  Although I have certainly broken this rule and still think for layering basics like T’s and tanks it’s ok, she makes a good point.  You want to create versatility in your wardrobe and bring in things that will completely shake up your outfits.

Next time you try something on or are ready to go to the register, think about whether you have a similar style in shape or color before you buy.  Instead, bring in something new that will allow you to accomplish more looks.  Maximize what you have!  People will notice.

Because I have so many jeans and wear them all the time, I like to buy tops as an easy way to get different looks.

Here are tops in colors and prints that would really shake up what I already own…

Sleeveless Tops:

MINKPINK Faux Suede Tank $68, BB Dakota Leopard Printed Tank $70, Equipment Sleeveless Blouse $178

My Favorite Online Shopping Spots

I do a lot of online shopping.  It’s super convenient and I like to be able to scour different sites to make sure I’m getting the best deals and sort through sales without feeling like I’m digging for gold amongst designer thirsty style enthusiasts in my way.  There are also a lot of free shipping incentives, along with discounted departments every day.  The easiest way to find out about deals and savings?  Sign up for the website’s daily email.  Yes, this can be incredibly annoying and as someone who wakes up each day with a minimum of 50 new emails all saying, “Indulge on _____ today, you deserve it!”, I get it.  That person definitely does not know my life.  If she did, she’d probably say “OK, Taylor, you can probably pass on your fourth pair of strappy sandals, don’t you think?”.  BUT, if you can develop a level of self control, it’s a great way to look out for things you are looking for.

I narrowed down my long list of online shopping sources below to include my very favorites.
