Flat Black Ankle Boots

I had a gift card to Barney’s and was almost positive I’d redeem it for work tops, which I desperately need (post on this coming tomorrow). I ultimately ended up purchasing my new favorite shoes of all time.

Leather Jackets

I love seasonal and trendy pieces, but staples that supersede a time of year are my guilty pleasure.  Maybe because they make purchasing them seem so much more sensible, but either way, it’s undeniable that a classic leather jacket should be part of every person’s wardrobe.  Fit is so important here, that I think spending a little above what you normally would on outerwear is ok – especially because you can pair this with, seriously, anything.

Summer Dresses Under $100

Everyone knows I love a good deal.  I’m talking any sort of discount whatsoever… $1 off, throw in a free gift, some sort of upgrade… it makes me giddy inside.  There’s a constant battle of splurging vs. saving in my head and I probably think about my purchases (both past and future) every 5 minutes.  I knew I had it bad when I once saw a sign while passing Old Navy at age 13 for .34 cent shirts.  I swear to you I remember nothing – like a total black out.  I came to, hours later, in my closet sifting through about 15 of the same exact shirt in every color they had.  I mean, I cleared out the racks.  Upside?  I still only spent about $6.  Low?  The shirt was horrible… like, really, really ugly.

There’s something about a deal that condones the purchase.  It’s a trap.  But, I’ve realized at the time it was so I’d have something to back up my argument when my Dad would get my Visa Buxx card statement (a pre-set limit debit card made for teenagers to teach them how to manage money which I BEGGED my parents for).  Being able to say, “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.  This was a once and a lifetime opportunity!  It would have been stupid NOT to have bought it!!” was just so much easier than flat out breaking the ‘no more clothes’ rule.  It got so bad that I used to buy things, hide the bags at my friends houses and then smuggle them into my house days later when my parents weren’t home… but that’s another story for another day.

In all reality, I’m still using the sale signs as a crutch for my chronic buyer’s remorse and the proof is that I wanted a really expensive pair of jeans last year so I flagged the website to let me know if any discounts/savings were happening.  A week later I got an email from them saying, “Free Shipping Until Midnight”.  Deal was done.  I saved $5.  Problem.

Summer Skirts

I’ve mentioned before that Summer dressing, to me, should be easy and effortless, but still polished.  There’s nothing better than being able to pair a great pair of pants or a bright silk skirt with your favorite tee or tank top.  It’s the perfect balance of appearing casual, yet like you still care about your appearance.

Lately I’ve been stocking up on skirts of different lengths in preparation for warm months.  I’m going for bold colors, interesting prints and fun hemlines to wear with my best simple solid colored tanks, layered with denim shirts or a light sweater.

Rompers

Let me start off by saying it took me a long time to get on board with this one.  Rompers can look amazing but are also a hot bed for looking like a fool.  There is only one thing you have to be sure of – FIT.  It should not be loose or baggy (especially in the back) and definitely not too tight.  They should be fitted in all areas.  It may even take a visit to the tailor.

Once you have the right proportions, however, they can be amazing.  SO easy to wear and they’re perfect for a weekend getaway like my trip to Santa Barbara these next couple of days.  They’re pretty no fuss and allow you to not have to put a lot of effort into coming up with a great outfit.

High Fashion Interest, Hot Mess Bank Account

I made the mistake of reading an article years ago that interviewed Cameron Diaz where she told a story about being undiscovered and choosing between paying her rent or buying an Alaia dress.  She said she still has the dress and that it remains to be one of her favorite pieces in her wardrobe.

Let’s just say I’ve been living under this mentality for five years and I’m still not a Charlie’s Angel.

Here’s to all the girls who shop online for hours, putting as many items into their “basket” as they want, only to see the final total, cry, close the window and head to H&M.

My Favorite Online Shopping Spots

I do a lot of online shopping.  It’s super convenient and I like to be able to scour different sites to make sure I’m getting the best deals and sort through sales without feeling like I’m digging for gold amongst designer thirsty style enthusiasts in my way.  There are also a lot of free shipping incentives, along with discounted departments every day.  The easiest way to find out about deals and savings?  Sign up for the website’s daily email.  Yes, this can be incredibly annoying and as someone who wakes up each day with a minimum of 50 new emails all saying, “Indulge on _____ today, you deserve it!”, I get it.  That person definitely does not know my life.  If she did, she’d probably say “OK, Taylor, you can probably pass on your fourth pair of strappy sandals, don’t you think?”.  BUT, if you can develop a level of self control, it’s a great way to look out for things you are looking for.

I narrowed down my long list of online shopping sources below to include my very favorites.

What to Wear When Nothing Else is Working

Living in California, I’m lucky to experience great weather throughout the year, but because I live by the beach, the ocean breeze usually causes a bit of a chill.  There have been many mornings where I wake up freezing and find myself elsewhere in Los Angeles, hours later, completely regretting my long sleeved wardrobe choices.  I’m also out for the whole day a lot and when the sun sets, the temperature drops significantly.

My solution to this is very commonly one of my favorite staples in my closet – maxi dresses.  They are pretty effortless when you find the right shapes and easily layered with jewelry, a jean jacket or a sweater.  You can also throw a tunic or crop top over a basic maxi to get a different look.  It’s a great way to look put together while on the go and a safe bet for a variety of occasions due to their combination of style and comfort.  I’m tall, so length is not usually a problem for me, but if you find them too long, know that many knit styles can be cut to your desired length or you can obviously consult with a tailor.

A while ago, I purchased a dress from Michelle Jonas (great travel/beach collection).  Never in my life have I had something that makes me feel good every time I wear it.   The best part about this dress is that it is incredibly flattering to almost anyone’s body.  I’m serious.  I call it the Sisterhood of the Traveling Dress because any of my friends can borrow it and look fantastic.  The straps are adjustable and can be tied tight, making it more supportive than you’d think.  It’s called the Keyhole Dress $235 (I got it in black, but you can get a variety of colors and tie dye options).  You should definitely own this.
