Oops… I Forgot _______ (Insert Celebration/Holiday/Get Together Here)

Listen – I’m busy.  Not busy enough to ignore things on my daily checklist for weeks (akhem… blogging), but c’mon – I really have been busy.  Summer has ended and even though I probably enjoy Fall the most as far as weather and really like dressing the part, some part of me subconsciously reverts back to pre-teendom, moping around the house (or I should say – around my small, 1 bedroom apartment), cursing the world that Summer is over.

I remember one particular night before School started – when I’d be making the leap from Middle to Upper School (Junior High to High School for you cooler kids).  I was positive things would finally change for me…  I’d go to parties, I’d be skinnier, I’d wear amazing outfits.  Two months into 9th Grade, I began to fear for this dream as I sat alone in my room, eating ice cream… in my uniform.  That’s when I realized I’d never be a freshman, I was a ninth grader and for those of you who don’t understand the difference, consider yourself lucky to have had a better experience than I did.

This would lead to lots of tears, total confusion while watching Dawson’s Creek (I spent hours plotting how I could be more like Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley, when my life looked much more like the Grandmother she lived with), and a little later in life – a full out rebellious attempt (I literally couldn’t even pull off the real thing).  I moved to California and tried to convince everyone that I was a bad, out of control, nonconformist.  The only problem was – I cried all the time, totally misjudged how black and purple hair would suit my fair skin (yes I use fair – pale is just harsh), and had struggled with severe anxiety my whole life.  I call my parents every day, I have personal relationships with every doctor, specialist and vet (all which have received panicked voicemails at all hours of the night graphically explaining what normally ends up being a mosquito bite), AND I fold at even the chance at confrontation (I once got into a small, verbal fight at a bar with a girl and then after telling my friends I was going to the bathroom, chased after her down the street and apologized – true and very ridiculous story I’ll save for another time).

SO, in the spirit of embracing the person you so desperately try not to be, but know you always will, I thought it would be useful to come up with a list of things that you should probably just buy now, because if you’re anything like me, you’re losing your mind and forget birthdays/cards/etc all the time.  End scene.  (P.S.  After re-reading this entry, I realize I will probably lose viewers.)

Weekend Bags

Summer inevitably brings on spontaneous trips that don’t involve a lot of planning.  They’re exciting and a great way to reconnect to that thrilling feeling that came during childhood in between School years.  Whether it’s a night away at a local hotel offering a great deal or an impromptu decision to drive a couple hours along the coast to a great vacation spot, I like to be able to get out of the house within an hour before the idea of actually doing it fades.  Some of my favorite daytime purses are actually larger weekend bags that are perfect for these occasions.  Big enough to fit the essentials for a different climate, but small enough so that it is easy to carry.

Summer Scarves

There are times when I love trying on what seems like my whole wardrobe, testing combinations to find the perfect outfit for an event, and then there’s my normal reality when I have 15 minutes to pick out what I’m wearing.  For those days, I usually go simple (printed pants or jeans with a solid top).  I always like to top it off with something more noticeable though, like a big statement necklace, an embellished headband or my latest addiction – summer scarves.

There are so many ways to wear them (around neck or head are my favs) and they can instantly amp up what would be a pretty plain look.

Denim Vests

I’ve been obsessing over finding a good denim vest for the upcoming Summer months.  It’s the perfect accessory to throw on over a maxi dress, printed skirt or colored denim.  At first, I contemplated shelling out a bit more for a basic medium washed denim vest, but after finding so many fun colors and prints, have decided Old Navy’s version (pictured first below) is perfect and will also allow me to choose one or two fun styles.

Denim Vests:

Old Navy Women’s Raw-Edged Denim Vest $29.94

ASOS Insight Denim Vest in Sundown Tie Dye $165.25

Framed

One of my favorite things to buy for myself and to give as gifts is a unique picture frame.  They contribute to the overall aesthetic of your home, while also providing an opportunity for a personal touch as you fill them with pictures that mean enough to display before your guests.

I usually gravitate towards fun shapes and designs, but also appreciate the simplicity of a nice neutral style.

Rompers

Let me start off by saying it took me a long time to get on board with this one.  Rompers can look amazing but are also a hot bed for looking like a fool.  There is only one thing you have to be sure of – FIT.  It should not be loose or baggy (especially in the back) and definitely not too tight.  They should be fitted in all areas.  It may even take a visit to the tailor.

Once you have the right proportions, however, they can be amazing.  SO easy to wear and they’re perfect for a weekend getaway like my trip to Santa Barbara these next couple of days.  They’re pretty no fuss and allow you to not have to put a lot of effort into coming up with a great outfit.

Magazine Holders

To say I get a lot of magazines is an understatement.  They have been a place of inspiration and a pleasure source since before I can remember and they are actually the reason this blog is named “ear-marked”.  I spent hours of my childhood flipping through them, turning down – or ear-marking – pages of things I had to have.

Yes, it’s true that most of these things were never purchased, but in the moment, the possibility seemed real.  What has resulted is a timeline of things I have loved.  A while ago, after realizing going from one end of my apartment to the other was more like swimming through Lucky’s and Elle Decor’s, I decided to invest in a large straw basket and promised myself I would keep my collection to the contents of it.  I started tearing out pages and filing them instead of keeping whole magazines – except for the ones that were so special just could not be thrown away.

Well, my basket looks more like a game of magazine Jenga at this point and is literally about to topple over.  What’s wrong with two baskets anyway?

Sunglasses!

Ah, my favorite accessory.  I love getting dressed up and have a pretty regular makeup routine, but there are days (especially on weekends) where I just have no energy to go beyond moisturizing.  At these moments, sunglasses are literally my saving grace.  Not only do they accessorize a simple look, but lets be real – they cover half your face.  Win!

I like to have a nice pair on hand that are reliable, while also protecting me from the Sun (ok… that’s just my excuse for spending over $100) but I also like to buy some novelty pairs that add fun and let me test out trendy eyewear without regretting it 5 minutes later.  I recently bought Fred Flare’s Red Heart Shaped Sunglasses for $14 and get complimented on them all the time.
